Impco Automotive, a supplier to General Motors for natural gas van conversions is recalling 2011-2013 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana models with compressed natural gas fuel systems. The companies found that some fuel shut-off solenoids manufactured by an outside supplier may be susceptible to corrosion, and could short circuit and potentially cause a fire. In addition to the solenoid, a separate recall has been issued for the vent pipe assembly as well.
The Problem: Solenoids on vans with a CNG conversion could corrode, and cause a short circuit that could lead to a fire. The pressure relief valve and vent pipe assembly on the CNG system may not vent correctly, venting natural gas into the passenger compartment.
The Fix: Impco, in conjunction with General Motors, will inspect and repair the vent pipe assembly and solenoid at no charge. Customers can contact the GM Fleet Action Center at 800-353-3867, or NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
Number of Units Affected: Approximately 1800 2011-13 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana models equipped with an Impco compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling system. The solenoid recall affects models manufactured from February 14, 2011, through February 20, 2013. The pressure relief valve recall affects units built from November 23, 2010, through December 23, 2010.
